WEEKLY DOSE

Driving down a country road in Nebraska, a woman spotted a farmer standing in the middle of a huge field doing nothing. Exiting her car, the woman walked all the way over to ask, "Excuse me, but what are you doing?"

I'm trying to win a Nobel Prize."

"How?"

"Well, I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field, and I’ve been trying for a year now.

If this had happened in Israel, it would have been understood that the farmer was standing in the field learning Torah, in accordance with the mitzvah given in this week’s Torah portion that farmers are to let their fields lay fallow every seventh year and go off to learn Torah.

Even if you are not a farmer in Israel, the Shmittah year has a profound message. Take some time off from the hustle and bustle and connect to your soul, your Maker and your heritage. Make time for Torah.
